The three main airline companies offering flights around Australia are Qantas Airlines, Virgin Blue and Regional Express (REX). Qantas offer flights to a large number of towns and cities in all states and territories within Australia. Virgin Blue is a budget airline, offering flights to a number of cities in every state and territory within Australia. Rex is the largest independent regional airline in Australia, providing flights within New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia.

There are also a number of smaller companies with limited service areas. Several of the other flight operators include: Airnorth who provide flights within the Northern Territory and Northern Australia (including Darwin, Cairns, Alice Springs and Broome). Eastern Australia Airlines who provide flights within New South Wales. Macair who provide flights around Queensland (including Armidale, Brisbane, Cairns, Cape York, Cloncurry, Hughenden,Julia Creek, Longreach, Mt Isa, Richmond, Tamworth and Townsville). Skywest who provide flights across Western Australia (including Albany, Karratha and Perth). Sunstate who provide flights within Queensland. Tasair who provide flights around Tasmania (including Burnie, Devonport, Hobart and King Island.

Flight Travel Passes

If you are willing to be flexible, then you can often find some reasonable deals on flights. The major airlines may offer special deals for students under 26 who can receive upto 25% off of a full economy fare, backpackers on presentation of a backpacking organisation card such as the YHA, and other international travellers who can receive upto 30% off of a full economy fare for presenting their international ticket.

Regional Express (REX)

Qantas

The Boomerang Pass is worked out on coupons charged at a long or short haul flight. You can buy upto 10 coupons, although two must be purchased before arriving in Australia. The Qantas Backpackers Pass also works on coupons. You must buy 3 coupons initially, and can then buy a further 6 coupons.

There is also a G’day Pass which works on set prices for travel within 3 zones around Australia. The Pass is available for the duration of your International flight ticket.
